Studies have shown that new employees are most likely to have an accident
during the first 90 days of employment and that the probability of accidents
reduces with experience. Management can help control this accident potential by
conducting a thorough, new-employee safety orientation and training, and then
reinforce this training with on-site supervision. One of the keys to creating a
safe work environment is for management to set an example and always follow
safe work procedures.
Since janitorial service workers will be required to work in the customer’s
facility, they should be trained in the customer’s emergency procedures and all
hazards associated with the facility. Guide your new employees through the
steps needed to ensure they are properly prepared to complete their assigned
duties in a safe manner.
New employees should:

Wear furnished uniforms or adhere to company clothing policies.

Wear slip-resistant shoes.

Check in with security guards or call into security when they arrive and leave
the work location.

Know the customer’s hazardous areas and operations in the building they are
servicing.

Learn how to use the local telephone system to report emergencies.

Learn how to activate emergency fire alarm systems.

Know how to evacuate the area and building in case of an emergency.

Ensure they know how to obtain emergency aid if injured at the work location.

Immediately depart the area and call for assistance if fires or other
emergencies develop.

Ensure they have a first aid kit available at their work site.

Have personal protective equipment available, such as knee pads, eye protection
or gloves.

Read all warning labels before using any cleaning chemicals.

Check electrical equipment cords for nicks, cuts or other damage before using.

Get help, or have the necessary equipment, when moving heavy furniture or
equipment.

Post signs warning of wet or slippery locations.
-
Immediately clean up any spills that might cause slips or falls.
-
Only work in areas with adequate lighting.
-
Never empty ashtrays into normal trash collectors.
