Safety Recommendations for the Arc Welder
Arc welding is a potentially dangerous job requiring that operators be
instructed on the safe operation of the equipment by a qualified teacher.
Unless proper safety precautions are taken, explosions can occur when welding,
cutting or other hot work is performed on used drums, barrels, tanks or other
containers.
Here are some safety recommendations that should be followed during arc welding
operations:
-
Place work to be welded on a firebrick or comparable surface at a comfortable
height.
-
Do not weld directly on a concrete floor. Heat from the arc can cause steam to
build-up in the floor and could cause an explosion.
-
Position the welder cables so that sparks and molten metal will not fall on
them.
-
Work on an insulating mat when welding on steel or other conductive material.
-
Wear rubber gloves under the welding gloves when the welding area is wet or you
are perspiring.
-
Clean the metal thoroughly by wire brushing or other methods prior to welding.
It is easier and safer to establish an arc on a clean surface than a dirty or
rusty one.
-
Wear eye and body protection when chipping slag or wire brushing the finished
bead.
-
Handle hot metal with metal tongs.
-
Mark with a soapstone any metal left to cool as "Hot."
-
Remove electrodes from the holder when welding is finished or suspended for any
length of time.
-
Place the holder where no accidental contact could occur and disconnect the
welder from the power source.
-
Do not place unused electrodes and electrode stubs on the floor as this may
cause a slip hazard.
Key Points to Remember
-
Be sure the welder is properly installed and grounded.
-
Never weld without adequate ventilation.
-
Take proper precautions to prevent fires.
-
Protect your entire body with fire retardant clothing, shoes and gloves.
-
Wear eye protection at all times.
-
Weld only in a fire-safe area.
-
Keep a well-stocked first aid kit handy.
